Bloody Mary Smoothie Shots
What if I treated the classic Bloody Mary like a cold vegetable smoothie and finished it with the salty crunch of an everything-bagel rim? The result is bright, savory, pickle-tangy, and easy to pass…
Ingredients
- 3 cups chilled tomato juice
- 1 cup English cucumber, peeled and chopped
- 1/2 cup celery, chopped
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 3 tablespoons dill pickle brine
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1 1/2 cups ice cubes
- 2 tablespoons everything bagel seasoning
Instructions
- Chill ten 3-ounce shot glasses or small appetizer cups for at least 10 minutes. Cold vessels help the smoothie stay crisp while it sits on a party table, and the small portions make the savory drink feel like a passed bite rather than a full beverage.
- Prepare the vegetables before blending: peel and chop 1 cup of English cucumber, chop 1/2 cup of celery into 1/2-inch pieces, and squeeze 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Remove any thick celery strings if the stalks feel fibrous, since those strands can make a small serving feel rough even after blending.
- Pour 3 cups of chilled tomato juice into the jar of a high-speed blender first. Adding the liquid before the vegetables gives the blades room to circulate and prevents cucumber and celery from packing tightly beneath the blade assembly.
- Add the chopped cucumber, celery, 1/2 cup Greek yogurt, 3 tablespoons pickle brine, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, and 1 teaspoon hot sauce. Add the yogurt before the ice so it disperses smoothly rather than clinging to cold cubes.
- Blend on low speed for 20 seconds, then increase to high and blend for 60 to 90 seconds, stopping once to scrape down the sides if needed. The mixture is ready when it looks uniformly coral-red, the celery flecks are very fine, and no cucumber chunks remain; blending longer than necessary can warm the drink and dull its fresh edge.
- Add 1 1/2 cups ice and blend on high for 20 to 30 seconds, just until the smoothie is cold, thick, and able to coat the back of a spoon. Do not blend until completely foamy. If the blender struggles, stop it, stir with a silicone spatula, and resume rather than adding extra liquid immediately.
- Taste the smoothie with a clean spoon and adjust before serving: add another tablespoon of pickle brine for sharper tang, a few drops of hot sauce for heat, or 2 to 3 tablespoons tomato juice if it is too thick to pour. The target is savory first, with lemon and pickle brightness arriving at the finish; remember that the seasoned rim will add salt.
- Spread 2 tablespoons everything bagel seasoning in a shallow saucer. Rub a lemon wedge or a dampened fingertip around the outer rim of each chilled glass, then roll only the rim through the seasoning so the crunchy mixture stays outside the drink and does not make the first sip gritty.
- Pour the smoothie slowly into the prepared glasses, leaving about 1/2 inch of space below each rim. Let the filled shots rest for 2 minutes in the refrigerator; this brief rest settles the foam and allows the pickle, Worcestershire, and celery notes to knit together.
- Arrange the glasses on a chilled tray and serve immediately, ideally within 20 minutes. For a more substantial party bite, set out short celery sticks for dipping or add a small pickle spear to each glass; stir the pitcher gently before refilling because vegetable solids naturally settle.
